Game Drawing

For this project, I started off by taking a picture of a board game of my choice, but in a different perspective than usual. I then drew the board game using pencils. After, I then took a variety of shades of water color on my picture using light washes so the color wouldn't be too dark. You had to make sure that the color got darker gradually as the picture went further back. After I was all done with the water colors and they were dried, it was time to overlap colored pencils on top of the water colors to help deepen up the color and make it look nicer and more colorful. I tried to also put shadows underneath the game pieces to make them look more like they’re standing up off the page, but that didn’t work as well as planned. One of the most difficult parts of this project is drawing using a vanishing point and a horizon line since you had to make that yourself and before, we were given the vanishing point and horizon line. Another challenging thing to do was to try to make everything you drawed have value and look somewhat realistic. From doing this piece, I learned that perspective drawing is harder than you think until you try it for yourself.

1. Explain how you changed your photo in the lab to create a stencil.

To change my image of the Golden Gate Bridge in California, we used photoshop and changed the contrast of the composition so that it was all black and white.

2. When creating the collage background explain your choices of colors, materials (magazine paper, books pages, etc), and placement. How does it relate to your topic? If no relation discuss general idea.

For my collage, I used book pages that looked like they were from old books. I placed them so that they were overlapping and so there wasn't really any space that was blank or plain.

3. Discuss the way positive and negative space was used to create your stencil.

You had to cut out stuff that you wanted to be negitive space out of the threshold and keep the stuff that you wanted to be positive space.

4. When using the xacto knife, explain the safety procedures, how to use the knife and any challenges you had to overcome while cutting.

While using the xacto knife, you had to be very careful so that you don't cut yourself on accident or make alot of mistakes. I made the mistake of making my stencil to thin and it ended up having more negative space then positive space.

5. How was your experience with the spray paint? Discuss how color choice is important, placement of stencil, and any other concepts you noticed while creating this. 
I liked this project since we used spray paint and that was fun. The color choice is important so you can see the image clearly. But it did felt like the overall project was kind of long and dragged on.

1. Describe the process you went through to change your object into the correct perspective to create the drawing. This is when you were in the lab.

 First, we had to find that objects picture that we wanted to transform. We then opened the photo in photoshop and distorted the image. We changed the scale size and the perspective so that it didn't really like how it started out at.

2. How did distorting and stretching the object allow for you to create a drawing that would look different to the viewer? 

Distorting my image and stretching it made the picture look differently to the veiwer since it wasnt the same as the original picture and people arent normally used to seeing distorted pictures like that.

3. What were the most important concepts in the project to make it successful? 

Drawing the image so that it has a lot of value was probably one of the most important things to do while creating the image so that it looks more realistic. Using colored pencils in order to add color was also pretty important. You also needed to make sure that you had shadows in your final drawing so that it looks more real. Drawing the image grid section by grid section was also the key to making it look more like the actual picture.

Print Making

SELF EVALUATION

 

1.     Describe the overall composition of your artwork (balance, unity, rhythm and movement).I feel like my artwork has a pretty good balance of negitive and positive space, and all the other things. 

  

2.     How did you add texture and contrast to your print? Is this important? Why? To add texture in the print, you had to use a variety of differnet thicknesses' of lines. I added contrast in my print since I used a color for my paper and a color of ink that differs and shows up easily. It is very important to have texture and contrast in each print.

3.     Explain how you used positive and negative space to show your image.

        To get negative space, you cut the parts that you want out from the       linoluim. To get postive space, you leave it untouched in the linoluim.

 

4.     Describe the craftsmanship of your print. (How good the project is technically crafted)  Most of my prints had good craftmanship since I mostly stayed in the registration marks. I also labeled all of my prints correctly.

 

5.     Were you able to achieve depth by showing a foreground, middle ground and back- ground? Explain. I think I somewhat acheived creating a foreground, since you can tell that the flamingo is in front and the flowers and grass is placed behind it.

6.     Explain your experience with Printmaking. What were the obstacles and advantages? One thing that comes to mind when I think of a obstacle that I faced is that it got messy sometimes. When cutting things out of the linolium there was a lot to throw away by the end of class. One of the advantages of print making was learning new things and techniques.

1. Explain your experience working on a team and executing your ideas for the mural.

I enjoyed working in a small group for this project, since we got to work as a team and get to know eachother a little bit. If there were more people in the group, we would have been crowded, but if we had less then 5, it would of been harder to get the work done. When we were thinking of ideas for our final chalk mural, each person in the group contributed and we didn't have much of a problem when it came to thinking of ideas.

2. Explain the importance of collaboration when working on a team.

It was really important to work together as a group when thinking of ideas so that we could come up with good ideas for the final chalk mural and so that we had many ideas to choose from. Also, we needed to all work together and have a part when doing chalk on the brick wall so it would get done in time and so that one person wasn't doing all the work while other people would sit back and relax. If we didn't work as a team for this project, it wouldn't have turned out as good and then one person would be forced to do all of the work.

3.  How successful was this project? Explain how and why.

This project for my group was sucsessful. We got our chalk mural up on the wall and it stayed there and withstanded the weather. We also worked together which was one of the things that we were supposed to do, so I would say my group was sucessful.

4. Explain how you feel about creating artwork that others can interact with. Ex. Invoving the whole school? 

I actually enjoyed creating artwork that others can interact with and I think that it's a really cool idea. Anybody can just walk by and interact with our artwork; some people probably even interact without even knowing. The project was fun and it didn't feel like a pain doing it, which is always good. I'm glad that I was a part of decorating the courtyard of my school with these great murals!

Print Sketch Critique

1. Why is texture so important to have in your sketches?

  Texture is important to have in your sketches so that it looks more realistic and three demensional.

2. Why is it neccessary for you to have several references of each animal and each background? Explain.

Having several referances for each animal that you draw is a necessity since you need to see the animal in differnt positions and at different angles. It's important to have a few background choices for each animal too so that you can incorperate the animals habitat into the sketch and to make it look like it's more real.

3. When you look at your sketches are you able to see which sketch is the strongest and will make the best print? How do you know this? 

Yes, I think that it's pretty easy to tell which sketch was your best since that's the one you take pride in the most and the strongest one of your sketches will have lots of texture and look the most real.

Value Portrait

Value Portraits Art Critique

Self evaluation (must write at least 3 sentences for each question)

1. Explain the process you went through to develop your drawing.

The fist thing that we had to do was take a picture. After, Mrs.Rossi printed out the pictures in black and white and hung them up on the board, face down and people went up one by one to choose a picture of a person and you didnt know which picture you were going to choose. Then, we all got a tracing peice of paper and we put that over the picture and traced the shapes that you saw. Mrs. Rossi then checked the outlines of the shapes that you saw in the persons face, and if it was good then you would move on and scribble with pencil all across the back of the tracing paper. We then retraced all the shapes into your sketchbook. To finish it off, we looked at the original picture that was taken and we added the values into the traced picture in our sketchbook.

2. Explain how you found the different values in the portrait?

To find the differnt values in the portrait, we drew the shapes of the values that we saw. We also did a value chart which was one inch by one inch to help determine which value was in the picture. Another thing that we did was compare the actual picture to the final picture in our sketch book to see if they were similiar or could compare.

3.  Did you achieve a full range of the different values within your portrait?  How?

I think that ia achieved some range of the different values in the portrait. The reason why i only think i achieved some is because i probably couldof added more and blended the colors that i drew. Most of the colors or ranges that are in my final portrait were about medium toned.

4. Describe your craftsmanship.  Is the artwork executed and crafted neatly?

I think that my art craftmanship was pretty good. I didnt color it messely or anything like that. The one thing that was messy though was when we scribbled on the back of the tracing paper since that got everywhere and on your hands.

5. List any obstacles you had to overcome and how you dealt with them.

One of the main obstacles i had to deal with was not tracing the portrait, but drawing the shapes that we saw. It was pretty hard to not just trace what i saw. Another thing was that since we scribbled on the back of the tracing paper; it was hard to see my outlines on the front of the sheet. One last thing was that it got kindof messy since there was so much lead on the back of the sheet so it got all over your hands.
